what is PPI?
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are drugs that are used to lessen the amount of acid made in the stomach.
PPIs are used to help calm symptoms of heartburn and other symptoms that result from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).few brand names in Pakistan include risek,Nexium,losec,omega,teph. etc
it's a common practice to use PPI in patients complaining of indigestion or heart burn or if some one is on long term NSAID(non-steriodal anti inflammatory drugs).
currently, 8/10 patients are on PPI medicines and most of them for years.
however, they should be aware of negative side effects associated with long term use.
1-Increased risk of heart attack.
2-Increased risk of pneumonia.
3-Bacterial infections introduced through foods.
4-Increased risk of a Clostridium difficile infection.
5-Decreased absorption of vitamin B12, calcium, magnesium, iron.
6-Increased risk of Barrett’s esophagus which can lead to cancer.
7-Increased risk of esophageal cancer.
8-There may be an increased chance of immediate or chronic kidney disease with use of PPIs.
9-raise the risk of osteoporosis.
if you are taking PPI medicine for more than 4 months discuss with your doctor.its time to avoid unnecessary side effects of long term medicine.
